Netscape (NASDAQ:NSCP) rides the renewed vigor of takeover talk with an announcement that 3,000 Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Internet Service Providers (ISPs), software developers, Web content providers and others have committed to distribute more than 36 million copies of Netscape browsers. On takeout price we estimate NSCP could fetch $3 billion in whole, or its Web site NetCenter perhaps $260 million to $300 million. But, in the end, it could fetch far less as hunters see it as a drag on earnings and a battle ahead to build its market share, especially in enterprise server software.
Open Market (NASDAQ:OMKT) reports $48.2 million revenue for 1997 vs. $17.2 million the prior year. Net loss for the year is $58 million vs. net loss of $26.5 million 1996. Fourth-quarter revenue reaches $14.8 million vs. $6.7 million 4Q96 with losses narrowing to $2.9 million vs. losses of $7.1 million 4Q96.
