Open source virtualization vendor XenSource is getting a new CEO.
Former Veritas executive Peter Levine has been named president and CEO of
the open source startup.
Most recently a managing director at the
Mayfield Fund, Levine was previously executive vice president for Strategic and
Platform Operations at Veritas leading global marketing
and OEM sales. Levine replaces former CEO Nick Gault.
XenSource is the lead commercial sponsor of the open source Xen
virtualization project and develops the XenOptimizer management application.
The company unveiled XenOptimizer alongside the recent release of the new Xen 3.0 application.
XenSource CTO Simon Crosby, in an interview last year, explained that XenSource is separate from
Xen and an equal competitor to others in the marketplace of Xen solutions.
The new CEO move does not affect leadership of the actual open source Xen
project, which remains under the direction of XenSource founder and Xen project manager Ian Pratt.
“With more than 30,000 downloads since December, open source Xen is quickly
re-shaping the virtualization marketplace,” said Pratt in a statement.
“Peter brings the exceptional industry leadership, depth of experience and strategic insight to capitalize on the huge demand for Xen-based virtualization solutions. The Xen open source community can have complete confidence in Peter’s commitment to the continued success of the project.”
Xen has been gaining in popularity in recent months with IBM’s support, as well as forthcoming inclusions by Sun Solaris,
Red Hat and Novell.
Xen competes against commercial virtualization offerings from VMware, which
recently released a new free application.
