Toshiba Corporation will demonstrate its 802.11b document controller at COMDEX starting Monday in Las Vegas. Toshiba’s GL-1010 Document controller, in its newly upgraded version 1.2, incorporates WLAN functionality for mobile users and will be available on its e-STUDIO28/35/45 digital MFP series machines.
The GL-1010, which has a 433 Mhz processor and 128 MB of memory, is equipped with a Cisco AiroNet 350 wireless NIC (for 802.11b connectivity), mounted internally and configured through the e-STUDIO’s front panel. The GL-1010 also incorporates a 10 Gig hard drive with built-in CD-ROM drive.
As an 802.11b printing solution, users can interface with the printers in two different modes. In Ad Hoc mode, users can access the document controller by knowing the machine’s name or IP address. This allows printing capability without corporate network access. Toshiba pointed out that the GL-1010 can support both wired and and wireless printing in ad hoc mode.
The other mode is the client-server oriented ‘infrastructure’ mode, which eliminates wiring costs and placement restrictions for the e-STUDIO machines.
