Exabyte Corporation and Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA), plan to hold a seminar with other associated SAN partners to highlight a variety of individual storage area network (SAN) technologies.
The seminar, to be held August 22 and 23 at CA’s offices, 140 Broadway, Floor 50 in Manhattan, will demonstrate that it takes more than just one company or one technology to create a high-performance SAN capable of serverless backup. The morning sessions of the seminar will be geared toward resellers and the afternoon sessions will be focused on end-users.
According to Exabyte, serverless backup allows backups to proceed directly from the disk to the tape drive without the data passing through the server. This means a major reduction in SAN overhead and elimination of server cycles, allowing backups to take place 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Exabyte’s X80 and X200 tape libraries with native Fibre Channel have an e-copy (extended copy) command built into its M2(TM) native Fibre Channel tape drives, allowing compatibility with CA ARCserve 2000 with serverless backup.
“The native fibre, serverless backup capability now in the final stages of certification testing with CA and Exabyte is the only one like it in the world today,” said Jim Campbell, SAN Alliance manager at Exabyte. “Native Fibre Channel connectivity allows our M2 drives to talk directly to the Fibre Channel SAN.” By using the e-copy command embedded into each individual drive, ARCserve 2000 is able to initiate multiple simultaneous backups across the SAN without requiring servers to handle the data. “This is going to have a huge impact on the speed and reliability of data backup and restore,” Campbell said. “Not only does throughput increase, but because the server is no longer involved, backups can take place all day and all night, 24 hours a day 7 days a week.”
